- Have OBD scanner ready and charged
π§ Step-by-Step Installation
Disconnect Battery & Remove Interior Trim
Disconnect the negative battery terminal (important safety step!). Remove the lower steering column trim cover (usually 2-3 bolts). Remove the upper column cover. Gently pry out any trim pieces around the steering column/instrument cluster area.
Remove Old Instrument Cluster
Remove the 4 bolts securing the instrument cluster to the dash (usually T10 Torx). Carefully pull the cluster straight out. You may need to unplug any connections on the back. Document which connectors go where by taking photos.
Take multiple high-quality photos of the connector positions, wire colors, and how things sit. You may reference these later for troubleshooting.
Transfer Connectors & Wiring
The 2015+ cluster uses the SAME connectors as your original cluster. You can typically just plug the wires directly into the new cluster. Before doing this, carefully examine both clusters to ensure the connector positions match.
While most 2015+ clusters are compatible with 2011-2014 wiring, ALWAYS verify the connectors match. If they don’t fit, do NOT force them. This is where compatibility matters most.
Prepare New Cluster & Bezel
The new 2015+ cluster typically comes with a new bezel that may require modification if you have an 8.4″ touchscreen display. Check if your bezel fits without modification. The bezel attaches differently on 2015+ modelsβtake your time here.
If you have the larger 8.4″ Uconnect screen, the 2015+ bezel attaches to the screen differently. Minor modifications may be needed (filing, bending tabs). This is not difficult but requires care.
Install New Cluster & Bezel
Insert the new cluster into the dash cavity. Align it properly and reinstall the 4 bolts. Tighten securely but don’t over-tighten. Install the new bezel around the cluster. Reconnect all wiring connectors to the new cluster, matching them to your documentation from step 2.
Reinstall Interior Trim
Reinstall the upper and lower steering column covers. Ensure they snap into place properly. No bolts should be forgotten. Verify all trim pieces fit flush with the dashboard.
Reconnect Battery & Initial Test
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to ON (don’t start the engine). The cluster should illuminate and run its self-test. You should see the mileage display. Check for any error messages or warning lights.
You may see “check instrument panel” or other warnings. This is normal for a new cluster. These will be resolved once you enable cluster swap mode in the Tazer.
Connect Tazer Module
Locate your OBD-II port (under the steering column on driver side). Plug in the ZAutomotive Tazer module. The Tazer should power on automatically. You may see the LED light up.
You can leave the Tazer plugged in permanently, or unplug it after setup (some users do both). If you unplug it, you’ll need to re-enable the cluster swap on next startup.
Enable Cluster Swap Mode
With the Tazer plugged in, turn the ignition to ON. On your steering wheel, press and hold the CRUISE CANCEL button and TRACTION CONTROL button simultaneously for 3-5 seconds. The cluster may flash or change screens. This activates cluster swap mode.
This is the key sequence that enables all the compatibility code. If it doesn’t work: check that Tazer is powered (LED light), ensure buttons are pressed together, try holding for longer (5-10 seconds).
Test All Functions
Test steering wheel buttons (volume, track skip, cruise control). Test the cluster displays (speedometer, temperature gauge, fuel gauge, warning lights). Turn on lights and verify brake/tail lights update on cluster. Test horn functionality.
- Steering wheel buttons should now work
- All gauges should respond to vehicle conditions
- Warning lights should function normally
- Mileage should display (may be wrong, that’s OK for now)
Optional: Mileage Correction with AlphaOBD
If the mileage display is wrong, you can correct it using AlphaOBD software. Connect OBD scanner, open AlphaOBD, go to Cluster module, and update the mileage value. This requires careful programming (see Tazer Configuration Guide for details).
Set the new cluster’s mileage to match your vehicle’s actual mileage. You can verify actual mileage by checking your service records or OBD data.
Final Testing & Documentation
Take a test drive (5-10 minutes). Verify cluster responds to speed, engine temperature, fuel consumption. Check that steering wheel controls work while driving. Verify no new warning lights appear.
Document your configuration for future reference. Note any features that are NOT yet working (these may be resolved in future Tazer updates).
π― Post-Installation Configuration
Initial Tazer Setup
After enabling cluster swap mode, the Tazer will begin mapping your steering wheel buttons. This happens automatically. Most buttons should work immediately.
Advanced Configuration (Optional)
For advanced features (custom display pages, sport mode, performance monitoring), see the Tazer Configuration Guide. You may use:
- Tazer Desktop Software – For visual button mapping
- AlphaOBD – For cluster programming (mileage, VIN, transmission settings)
- CAN Bus Analyzer – For advanced users exploring data
Newer Tazer firmware includes a “persist” feature. Once enabled, cluster swap stays active even if Tazer is unplugged (you can remove it from OBD port). Older firmware requires Tazer to stay plugged in for steering wheel buttons to work.
β οΈ Common Issues & Quick Fixes
| Issue | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Cluster doesn’t power on | Wrong connectors, loose connection | Verify all connectors are fully seated. Check battery connection. Retest. |
| Steering wheel buttons don’t work | Tazer not enabled, wrong button sequence | Verify Tazer is powered. Retry button sequence (CRUISE + TRACTION for 5 sec). |
| Mileage shows wrong number | Normal for new cluster, needs programming | Use AlphaOBD to set correct mileage value. See Configuration Guide. |
| Fuel gauge stuck on full | Cluster incompatibility or CAN bus issue | Verify cluster model is compatible. Check forums for this specific cluster model. |

π§ Steering Wheel Button Mapping
How Button Mapping Works
The Tazer creates a “translation layer” between your old steering wheel buttons (2011-2014 signals) and the new cluster (2015+). It does this automatically in most cases.
Manual Button Mapping (Optional)
If steering wheel buttons don’t work automatically, you can manually map them:
In Tazer ZPU Software:
- Connect Tazer to computer and vehicle
- Go to “Controls” tab
- Select “Steering Wheel Buttons”
- You’ll see a list of button functions
- For each button not working:
- Press the physical button on your steering wheel
- Tazer will detect the signal
- Map it to the corresponding cluster function
- Click “Save” when done
Common Button Functions
| Button/Control | Function | Status in Cluster Swap |
|---|---|---|
| Volume Up/Down | Audio volume control | β Works |
| Track Skip/Back | Next/Previous track | β Works |
| Cruise Control On/Off | Enable/disable cruise | β Works |

Once cluster swap is enabled, you can access advanced settings by:
- Turn ignition to ON
- Use steering wheel controls to navigate cluster display menu
- Look for “Cluster Swap” or “Settings” option
- Adjust settings as needed
Important Settings for Cluster Swap
π Cluster Swap Mode (Enable/Disable)
Toggle cluster swap functionality on/off. Once enabled with newer firmware, persists even after unplugging Tazer.
π¨ Display Customization
Some Tazer versions allow:
- Custom splash screen (logo selection)
- Display brightness adjustment
- Performance page selection (SRT pages, etc.)
- Data display customization
π‘ CAN Bus Configuration
Advanced users can access raw CAN bus signals for custom applications. Not recommended unless you understand CAN bus protocol.
π Firmware Lock (Security)
Prevents others from changing your Tazer settings. Useful if sharing vehicle or selling.
π‘οΈ Tazer Persistence: Keep Cluster Swap Active
Old Behavior (Firmware < 2.4.3)
Cluster swap only works when Tazer is plugged in. If you unplug it:
- Steering wheel buttons stop working
- Some cluster functions disable
- You must re-enable on next startup
New Behavior (Firmware 2.4.3+)
Cluster swap stays active permanently once enabled:
- Enable cluster swap with Tazer plugged in
- Unplug Tazer from OBD port
- Cluster swap remains active even with Tazer removed
- Steering wheel buttons continue to work
- No need to re-enable on each startup
While newer firmware keeps cluster swap “on” after unplugging, steering wheel button control is still a “live” function in some Tazer versions. This means buttons may only work when Tazer is plugged in. Check your Tazer manual for specifics.
For convenience, many users leave their Tazer plugged in permanently. If you unplug it, make sure to test that buttons still work for your specific Tazer version.
π Tazer Compatibility by Steering Wheel Type
2011-2014 Dodge Charger Steering Wheels
| Wheel Type | Cruise Control? | Media Buttons? | Cluster Swap Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base Steering Wheel | β No | β No | β Basic |
| Standard Controls Wheel | β Yes | β Yes | β Full Support |
| Premium/Sport Wheel | β Yes | β Yes | β Full Support |
| Aftermarket Wheel (with buttons) | β Varies | β Varies | β οΈ Manual Mapping |
If you have an aftermarket steering wheel with custom buttons, button mapping requires manual setup. You’ll need to identify the signal each button sends and map it in the Tazer software.
π Verifying Cluster Swap is Enabled
How to Check Status
- Plug Tazer into OBD-II port
- Turn ignition to ON
- Look at instrument cluster display
- Try pressing steering wheel buttons (volume, track skip, etc.)

Solutions for Common Issues & Advanced Fixes
For 2011-2014 Charger β 2015+ Cluster Swaps
π Symptom Finder (Quick Navigation)
Click on your issue to jump to the solution:
β Cluster Won’t Power On
β οΈ Symptom
Cluster display is completely blank. No lights, no text, nothing. Battery connected and other systems work fine.
Possible Causes
| Cause | How to Check | How to Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Connectors not fully seated | Look at cluster connectors. Are they fully clicked in? | Disconnect and reconnect each connector firmly until you hear/feel a click. |
| Wrong connector orientation | Compare original cluster wiring diagram to new cluster layout. | Verify each connector goes into the correct port. Don’t force connectors that don’t fit. |
| Loose or corroded battery terminal | Check battery positive and negative terminals for tightness and corrosion. | Tighten battery terminals. Clean any corrosion with baking soda + water. |
| Blown fuse | Check fuse box (under hood and in cabin). Look for cluster-related fuses. | Identify which fuse controls cluster. Replace with same amperage (usually 10A). |
| Defective new cluster | Test with known-good original cluster. Does original work? | Return donor cluster. Request replacement or refund from seller. |
If new cluster won’t power on but original cluster does, the problem is likely the new cluster itself (defective unit) or a connector mismatch. Carefully compare connector types and positions between old and new clusters.
π Mileage Showing Wrong Number
β οΈ Symptom
Cluster displays wrong mileage (too low, too high, or random). Gauges work fine, buttons work, but odometer is incorrect.
Why This Happens
The new cluster was programmed at the factory with its own mileage history. When you install it in your car, it keeps that old mileage. You need to reprogram it to match your vehicle’s actual mileage.
Odometer fraud is illegal. ONLY update mileage to match your vehicle’s ACTUAL mileage. Use service records, OBD data, or previous documentation to verify correct mileage. Falsifying mileage is a federal crime.
How to Fix: Using AlphaOBD
Step 1: Gather Tools & Information
- Download AlphaOBD software (free version available at alphaobd.com)
- Get OBD-II Bluetooth adapter (OBDLink MX+ is popular, ~$25-50)
- Determine your ACTUAL vehicle mileage:
- Check service records
- Look at insurance documents
- Check maintenance receipts
- Read OBD data from PCM
- Make sure your phone or computer has Bluetooth
Step 2: Connect OBD Adapter
- Plug Bluetooth OBD adapter into OBD-II port (under steering column)
- Turn ignition to ON (don’t start engine)
- Wait for adapter to power on (usually LED lights up)
- On your phone/computer, open Bluetooth settings
- Pair with your OBD adapter (password usually 1234 or 0000)
Step 3: Update Mileage in AlphaOBD
- Open AlphaOBD software
- Go to “Modules” β “Cluster”
- Look for mileage/odometer setting (labeled “Mileage”, “Odometer”, “Kilometers”, or similar)
- Enter your ACTUAL vehicle mileage
- Click “Write” or “Program”
- Wait for confirmation message
- Turn ignition OFF and back ON
- Check cluster to verify mileage updated
- If it doesn’t take on first try, try multiple times (AlphaOBD sometimes requires repeated attempts)
- Round UP to nearest 10 miles if you’re not sure (safer legally)
- Some clusters also have “Engine Hours” setting you can update (optional)
- VIN update is also in this menu (optional, just for “factory feel”)
Your cluster should now display the correct mileage. All other cluster functions should continue working normally. You can verify the update by scanning with OBD, which will show matching mileage values.
β½ Fuel Gauge Stuck or Wrong
β οΈ Symptom
Fuel gauge shows full all the time, or stuck at one position, or doesn’t match actual fuel level. Often accompanied by lightning bolt throttle light on display.
Known Issue (Some 2015+ Clusters)
This is a known compatibility issue with certain 2015+ cluster models (especially 2020+ models). The CAN bus signal for fuel level differs slightly between generations.
Solutions
Solution 1: Try Different Cluster (Recommended)
If possible, get a different year cluster. 2015-2017 clusters tend to have fewer issues. 2020+ models have more compatibility problems.
- Best options: 2015-2017 clusters
- OK options: 2018-2019 clusters
- Problematic: 2020+ clusters (may have gas gauge issue)
Solution 2: Workaround (Live With It)
If you can’t change clusters, many users work around this:
- Use distance-to-empty gauge (usually works correctly)
- Fuel gauge cosmetic issue only (fuel system works fine)
- Can refuel by range instead of visual gauge
Solution 3: AlphaOBD Adjustment (Limited Success)
Some users report AlphaOBD can help, but results vary:
- Open AlphaOBD
- Go to BCM module settings
- Look for fuel tank calibration or fuel send unit settings
- Try adjusting these values (this is experimental)
Note: This often doesn’t fully solve the problem, but sometimes helps slightly.
As of February 2026, there’s no perfect fix for this issue with 2020+ clusters. The safest solution is using a 2015-2017 cluster donor. Check the Compatibility Matrix to see which models have this problem documented.
β οΈ “Check Instrument Panel” Warning Light
β οΈ Symptom
Dashboard shows “Check Instrument Panel” or instrument cluster warning message at startup.
What It Means
This is a normal pre-activation message. The cluster is saying “Hey, I don’t recognize this configuration yet.”
How to Fix
- Enable cluster swap mode using the button sequence
- Press CRUISE CANCEL + TRACTION CONTROL for 3-5 seconds
- The warning should disappear after successful activation
- If warning persists, try re-enabling (press buttons again)
Once cluster swap is enabled, the warning will be replaced with normal cluster display. This usually happens within 10-30 seconds of activation.
If the warning keeps coming back, it means Tazer is losing power or cluster swap isn’t staying enabled. This usually indicates a firmware version issue. Update Tazer to 2.4.2+ for persistence.
π Gauges Moving Erratically
β οΈ Symptom
Speedometer, temperature gauge, or other needle gauges jumping around, moving slowly, or not responding to actual vehicle conditions.
Troubleshooting Steps
| Check | How | Fix If Bad |
|---|---|---|
| Connector seating | Look at all cluster connectors. Are they pushed in fully? | Disconnect and re-seat each connector firmly. Ensure audible click. |
| Bent connector pins | Inspect all pins in connectors (both sides). Any bent or damaged? | Carefully straighten bent pins with needle-nose pliers. If pin breaks, connector may be defective. |
| Intermittent connection | Gently wiggle cluster while monitoring gauges. Do they drop/jump? | Tighter connectors or replace cables if damaged. |
| Defective cluster | Test with original cluster. Are gauges smooth on original? | If original is smooth and new is jumpy, new cluster may be defective. Return it. |
When you first turn ignition ON, the cluster runs a self-test where all gauges cycle through their range. This is normal. Erratic behavior during regular driving indicates a problem.
β Advanced Features Not Working
β οΈ Symptoms
Specific features don’t work:
- ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) showing error
- SRT performance pages not showing
- Sport mode icon missing or won’t activate
- Custom display text not appearing
- Parking sensors not displaying on cluster
Important: Known Limitations
| Feature | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ACC / FCW | β οΈ Live Function | Requires Tazer to stay plugged in. Newer firmware may support persistence. |
| SRT Performance Pages | β Supported | Enable in AlphaOBD under BCM settings. Look for “Performance Display” or “SRT Pages” |
| Sport Mode Icon | β οΈ Partial | Some firmware versions support this. Check Tazer latest release notes. |
| Parking Sensors Display | β Works | If vehicle has parking sensors, usually displays automatically on 2015+ cluster. |
| Rear Camera Display | β Works | Backup camera feed usually displays correctly on new cluster. |
| Custom Splash Screen | β οΈ Varies | Supported in some cluster models. Some models won’t change splash screen. |
How to Enable SRT Pages
- Connect OBD-II Bluetooth adapter to vehicle
- Open AlphaOBD software
- Go to “Modules” β “BCM”
- Search for “SRT” or “Performance”
- Find setting for “SRT Pages” or “Performance Display”
- Enable/toggle ON

π₯οΈ INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TYPE COMPATIBILITY
Screen Size Matters
| Your Screen Size | Compatible Cluster Screens | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 4.3″ (Standard) | 4.3″ clusters from 2015+ | Most common. Direct plug-and-play. No bezel modification needed. |
| 8.4″ (Uconnect) | 8.4″ clusters (rare) or 4.3″ with bezel mod | If using 4.3″ cluster in 8.4″ car, bezel attachment is different. Minor modification needed. |
Most 2011-2014 vehicles have 4.3″ displays. The 8.4″ Uconnect is less common. Always verify which display you have BEFORE ordering a donor cluster. 4.3″ is more available and easier to install.
βοΈ TRANSMISSION COMPATIBILITY
| Your Transmission | Cluster Display | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5-Speed Automatic (545RFE) | Shows 5 gears or P-R-N-D | β Works | Can be configured in AlphaOBD or Tazer. Manual adjustment if needed. |
| 8-Speed Automatic (8HP70/90) | Shows 8 gears or P-R-N-D | β Works | Natural match with 2015+ clusters (they’re 8-speed equipped) |
| 6-Speed Automatic (NAG1) | Shows 6 gears | β Works | Some 2011-2014 vehicles. Can be configured properly. |
| Manual / Stick (6-Speed) | Shows gear or neutral | β οΈ Partial | Rare in these vehicles. May not display gear correctly. Not well tested. |
If you have a 5-speed transmission and install an 8-speed-equipped cluster, it will display 8 gears but you only have 5. This is purely cosmetic. You can adjust this in AlphaOBD to show your actual transmission type.

β Quick Reference FAQ
Q: Can I use a 2012 Charger cluster in my 2014 Charger?
A: Yes, all 2011-2014 clusters are cross-compatible (older to newer). However, you want to UPGRADE to a 2015+ cluster, not go backward.
Q: My Charger has 8.4″ display. Can I use a 4.3″ cluster?
A: Yes, but you’ll need to modify the bezel slightly. The 4.3″ cluster attaches differently to the 8.4″ screen. Not difficult, but requires some work.
Q: Can I use a Challenger cluster in my Charger?
A: Yes! Both are LX platform. Challenger clusters work great in Chargers and vice versa.
Q: What about a 2011 Charger cluster in my 2014 Charger?
A: Technically yes, but why? You want to upgrade to 2015+. That’s the whole point of the swap.
Q: Will 2020+ cluster work in my 2011 Charger?
A: Yes, but fuel gauge may stick on full. Better to stick with 2015-2019 models for reliability.
Q: How do I know what transmission my car has?
A: Check your paperwork, door jamb sticker, or OBD scan. Or look under the car for transmission model number. 5-speed and 8-speed are most common in 2011-2014 Chargers.
