Important for 2018+ Vehicles

Many 2018+ Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles require an SGW bypass / Smart Access cable in addition to a PCM unlock. The unlock prepares the PCM for tuning, but the bypass may still be needed for the tuning device to communicate with the vehicle.

What is PCM unlocking?

PCM unlocking is the process of preparing a factory locked Powertrain Control Module so it can accept supported aftermarket tuning and calibration changes. On many modern FCA/Stellantis vehicles, the PCM is locked from the factory to prevent unauthorized flashing.

Once unlocked, the PCM can be used with compatible tuning platforms such as HP Tuners, DiabloSport, and other supported flash tools depending on the PCM family, vehicle year, and calibration strategy.

Supported PCM families

GPEC2

Earlier Global Powertrain Engine Controller family used across many FCA applications. Often associated with older HEMI, V6, and truck/SUV platforms before later GPEC generations became common.

GPEC2A

Updated GPEC2-style controller used on many later FCA vehicles. Commonly seen in 2015+ tuning/unlock conversations for Charger, Challenger, 300, Durango, Grand Cherokee, and Ram applications.

GPEC3

Newer-generation PCM family used on select FCA/Stellantis applications. Identification matters because unlock method, tuning support, and calibration handling may differ from GPEC2/GPEC2A.

GPEC4

Later FCA/Stellantis controller generation with different security and flash behavior than earlier GPEC2-based modules. Often requires more careful verification before service.

GPEC4LM

Variant of the GPEC4 family used on specific late-model applications. The “LM” variant should not be assumed to unlock or tune the same way as standard GPEC4 without confirming the part number.

GPEC5

Latest-generation GPEC controller family found on newer Stellantis vehicles. These PCMs may have different security, tuning support, and service requirements than older GPEC2/GPEC2A controllers.

GPEC differences explained

The biggest difference between GPEC2, GPEC2A, GPEC3, GPEC4, GPEC4LM, and GPEC5 is not just the name on the controller. Each family can use different internal hardware, flash memory layout, security access method, boot/loader behavior, and tuning-tool support.

PCM Family
Main Difference

GPEC2
Older generation controller family. Often easier to identify on earlier FCA platforms, but still requires exact part number verification.

GPEC2A
Updated GPEC2 architecture commonly tied to 2015+ tuning/unlock services. Often used in HEMI/SRT/Ram/Jeep performance applications.

GPEC3
Newer family with different flash/security behavior from GPEC2A. Must be checked before assuming the same tuning workflow.

GPEC4
Later controller generation with stricter security and platform-specific service requirements.

GPEC4LM
A GPEC4 variant. Do not treat it as automatically interchangeable with regular GPEC4.

GPEC5
Newest family listed here. Tuning support and unlock process can be more limited or more specific depending on application.

Best practice: send a clear photo of the PCM label before shipping. The exact part number, hardware number, and vehicle application matter more than guessing by vehicle model alone.

What is included

PCM Unlock Service

Unlocking for supported locked FCA/Stellantis PCM families so compatible tuning tools can write calibrations.

Compatibility Review

Part number and application review before service to reduce the chance of sending the wrong PCM.

Factory Function Retained

The goal is to preserve normal OEM functionality while enabling tuning access where supported.

How to send your PCM

01

Contact us first

Send your vehicle year, make, model, engine, PCM part number, and tuning device.

02

Send only the PCM

Remove brackets, covers, isolators, wiring, and extra hardware unless we specifically ask for them.

03

Pack it securely

Use bubble wrap and a strong box. Do not let the PCM move freely inside the package.

04

Include your info

Include name, phone, email, return address, vehicle details, and service requested.

Proof of Ownership Required

Proof of ownership may be required for PCM unlocking, VIN-related work, anti-theft related service, or replacement module programming.

  • Vehicle title or registration
  • Bill of sale with matching VIN
  • Insurance documentation
  • Dealer paperwork or repair order

Frequently asked questions

What PCM families do you support?

We work with supported FCA/Stellantis PCM families including GPEC2, GPEC2A, GPEC3, GPEC4, GPEC4LM, and GPEC5 depending on part number, vehicle application, and tuning-tool support.

Is GPEC2A the same as GPEC2?

No. GPEC2A is an updated controller family related to GPEC2, but it can have different hardware, memory layout, and security behavior. Always verify by PCM label and part number.

Do 2018+ vehicles need anything else?

Many 2018+ vehicles require an SGW bypass or Smart Access cable so the tuning device can communicate with the vehicle after the PCM is unlocked.

Will unlocking tune my vehicle?

No. Unlocking only prepares the PCM for supported tuning access. A separate tune or calibration file is still required from your tuner or tuning platform.

Can I send brackets or extra parts?

Send only the PCM unless instructed otherwise. Extra brackets, isolators, or hardware may not be returned.

How long does PCM unlocking take?

Typical turnaround is 24-48 hours after the correct PCM is received. Rush service depends on current workload.

Legal / Emissions Notice

PCM unlocking and calibration changes may affect emissions compliance, inspection readiness, warranty coverage, and street legality. Services are intended for lawful use, competition/off-road applications where applicable, diagnostics, repair, replacement module setup, or other legally permitted purposes.

The customer is responsible for ensuring the vehicle remains compliant with federal, state, and local laws. Do not use tuning or PCM services to remove, bypass, disable, or defeat required emissions equipment on street-driven vehicles.
